Victoras Papadopoulos: No Leaders' Meeting to Take Place during UN General Assembly

No meeting will take place between the President of Cyprus, the UN Secretary General and the Turkish Cypriot leader during the UN General Assembly, next month in New York, Deputy Government Spokesman Victoras Papadopoulos said on August 24.

In a written statement, Papadopoulos said that the potential for a meeting between the three men will be examined after the end of the current phase of intensified talks for a Cyprus solution, Cyprus News Agency reports. If such a meeting is deemed necessary, it will take place after the UN General Assembly, the Deputy Government Spokesman adds.

Moreover, in reply to criticism that such a meeting would upgrade the Turkish Cypriot leader, Papadopoulos notes that settlement talks are conducted under the auspices of the United Nations. Following the 1974 Turkish invasion, all Cyprus Presidents had similar meetings, in the framework of talks, albeit without ever assuming that either the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime, in occupied Cyprus, or the Turkish Cypriot leader are being upgraded, Papadopoulos concludes.

The announcement cites a list of all meetings that have taken place since 1974, involving the President of Cyprus, the Turkish Cypriot leader and the UN Secretary General, respectively.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN backed talks between Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci resumed in May 2015 aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
