Christodoulides: Cyprus Leaders to Thoroughly Discuss All Issues in Upcoming Meetings

The next seven meetings to be held between the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci are deemed as important and will determine the future of the talks, Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides told Cyprus News Agency on August 19.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Christodoulides also said that, starting on Tuesday August 23, upcoming discussions will be held in relation to all chapters in Cyprus talks, including issues that have not been discussed in depth or for which there has been disagreement. On Tuesday, the two sides will also determine the agenda of the meetings to follow in the ongoing, intensified stage of Cyprus talks.

"The next seven meetings will be particularly important and will determine the way the whole process may go ahead" Christodoulides told CNA.

The last of the seven meetings will be held on September 14, before President Anastasiades is expected to depart for New York in order to attend the UN General Assembly.

According to the Government Spokesman, during those meetings, all Cyprus chapters will be discussed, and in particular issues on which there has not been a thorough discussion as of yet, or on which the two sides have simply recorded their disagreement.

The discussion that will take place aims to increase common understanding between the two sides, or even lead to convergences, he added.

Christodoulides also said that during the meeting on Tuesday, the two sides are expected to set the concrete agenda of their next meetings and also discuss their expectations in regard to the outcome of this new, intensified phase of talks.

The seven meetings are set to take place on August 23, 29, 31 and September 2, 6, 8 and 14.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-led talks between Anastasiades and Akinci have been underway since May 2015, aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof
