Anastasiades Informs Parties over Settlement Talks

On June 30, President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades met with political leaders, at the Presidential Palace, presenting a set of proposals over how to make the National Council more effective, the Cyprus News Agency reports. He also informed the representatives of political parties over his meetings with Mustafa Akinci, the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, in the framework of UN-backed negotiations for a Cyprus settlement.

Speaking after the meeting, Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides said that proposals concerning the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the question of Cyprus, included the number of attendees, the confidentiality of discussions and the formation of subcommittees on dedicated issues.

The National Council is an advisory body and it is up to the President of the Republic to decide over the way it operates, Christodoulides has said.

Some political parties expressed their disagreement with part of the proposals and will come back with suggestions, after briefing their party organs.

President Anastasiades also informed political leaders in detail on settlement talks and in particular on the content of the latest, intensified talks with Akinci, and answered their questions.

The Government Spokesman said that parties will have access to relevant documents and come up with suggestions at the next National Council session, following the summer break. He clarified that it is up to the parties to request to study the documents.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Since then, the fate of hundreds of people remains unknown.
