Syllouris to Take Initiatives for Missing Persons Issue

House Speaker Demetris Syllouris announced on July 25 that he will be taking up initiatives at a European level, as regards the issue of missing persons in Cyprus, with the aim to speed up the work of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP).

Syllouris said he will also turn to the President of the Greek Parliament for assistance.

Speaking to the press following a meeting he had with Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Fotis Fotiou, Syllouris said that he was informed on the issue and the obstacles that still arise, 42 years after the Turkish invasion of the island.

He said that they agreed with Fotiou that actions should be taken at a European level, adding that his counterparts in Europe should be briefed on the matter.

Fotiou described the meeting as productive and added that he informed Syllouris on the difficulties the CMP is faced with. He pointed out that we are at a crucial point and that remains of missing persons are no longer located in the occupied areas. He said that efforts should be intensified and pressure should be put on Turkey to cooperate.

A Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) was established, upon agreement between the leaders of the island`s two communities, with the scope of exhuming, identifying and returning the remains of missing persons to their relatives.
