Anastasiades Calls On A Meeting of Geo-Strategic and National Councils

The President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has called a meeting of the Geo-strategic Council on July 19 to evaluate the developments in Turkey, following the military coup attempt, Cyprus News Agency reports.

At the same time the President said that as soon as possible the National Council will also convene as soon as possible to discuss the situation and how this affects the Cyprus problem.

In statements to the press, the President said that there was no need, at the moment, to speculate how the situation in Turkey would affect the Cyprus problem; however it is something that concerns us.

He pointed out that the developments concern us not because Cyprus can determine everything that is taking place in Turkey, but because what is taking place in Turkey, concerns Cyprus, and especially the negotiations. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-backed talks are underway with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof.

The President said that even though everyone condemned attacks on democracy, “we want to believe, and hope, that the democratically elected (Turkish) government, will not act as if there was a coup”.

In another question that seems to be serious interest from US companies regarding the third licencing round for the offshore exploration of EEZ blocks 6, 8 and 10 in Cyprus` exclusive economic zone, the President of the Republic said that announcements will be made after the applications are submitted, but pointed out that there is great interest by multinational companies. The deadline to apply for hydrocarbon exploration licences is on July 22, 2016.
