Victoria Nuland: US Role in Cyprus is to Hear Both Sides

The only role the US has in Cyprus is to “hear both sides”, according to Victoria Nuland, the US Assistant Secretary of State, who is currently visiting the island, the Cyprus News Agency.

“Our sole role here is to hear both sides,” US Assistant Secretary of State responsible for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland said, after a meeting she held in Nicosia with President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades.

Nuland told reporters that it was “a really really good meeting, very hard working, the two leaders are working very hard. I have to go to the other side of the island and keep working.”

Nuland was due to meet the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mustaf Akinci, who with President Anastasiades is engaged in negotiations to find a solution to the protracted Cyprus issue.

Asked if President Anastasiades asked her to convey a message to the Turkish government, Nuland said “our sole role here is to hear both sides.”

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. UN-led peace talks are currently underway to reunite the country under a federal roof.
