Alexander Zenon Holds Contacts in The Hague on Cyprus Issue, Economy, Syria and Brexit

The latest developments in the Cyprus problem, the recovery of the economy, Syria and Brexit were on the agenda of contacts Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Ministry Ambassador Alexander Zenon has had in The Hague.

According to a press release on Thursday, November 17, Zenon met with his counterpart Yoka Brandt whom he briefed on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem.

Zenon also attended the 15th Conference of the members of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. In his intervention Zenon reaffirmed Cyprus` support of the Court, Cyprus News Agency reports.

He pointed out that in Cyprus for more than four decades "we are very well aware of the criminal offences included in the Rome Statute". Zenon expressed his concern over the decision of some countries to exit the Stature, pointing out Cyprus` readiness to engage in a dialogue with these countries. In his speech he referred also to the decision of the Court on the destruction of historical and religious monuments.

He underlined that Cyprus is very sensitive to issues related to cultural heritage and its protection and this is a top priority for the island`s Chairmanship of the Council of Europe.

During his two-day visit to The Hague, Ambassador Zenon also met with Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Ahmet Üzümcü and the Director-General of ICMP Kathryne Bomberger. He briefed her on the job of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus and Turkey`s failure to implement the ECHR decisions.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. UN-backed peace talks are underway with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof. To date, out of an official list of 2001 missing persons, the CMP has identified and returned the remains of more than 700 individuals to their families.
