Anastasiades: People to Move Freely Within Common Borders after a Cyprus Settlement

The President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades on Monday, October 31, expressed hope that people residing legally in Cyprus will soon be able to move around the country freely, within common borders, Cyprus News Agency reports.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Cyprus Broadcast Corporation Radio & Television museum, at CyBC premises, in Nicosia, President Anastasiades also clarified that ongoing discussions over the public service concern the federal level, while constituent states will continue with their own public servants, courts and health systems.

In his speech, the President of the Republic noted that "the borders of Paphos, of Kyrenia, of Apostolos Andreas will be common for all citizens residing legally in this country", following a Cyprus settlement.

As CyBC reaches all corners of Cyprus, in the same manner all citizens will be able "to move freely, to settle down freely, to finally be able to freely believe in this country" he underlined.

The President expressed moreover hope that developments will lead to a settlement, setting the conditions for a truly peaceful coexistence. What matters most is not which part will be administered by whom, but rather on what rules it will be administered, he added.

He assured that the aim is to secure seamless cooperation, on the basis of the acqui communautaire, EU principles and respect for human rights.

The President of Cyprus said that talks on the public service concern the federal government and its 1,500 to 2,000 public servants, while the respective constituent states will continue with their own public service, courts, health and social security systems.

Moreover, he said that the federal court will resolve constitutional disputes, while radio frequencies will be regulated by the central government.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country, under a federal roof.
