The international aspect of the Cyprus problem, the issue of security and guarantees and the role the UN Security Council could play in the ongoing UN brokered peace talks in Cyrpus are expected to be discussed during the meetings the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Marc Ayrault will have on Tuesday, October 25, in Nicosia.

Ayrault who arrives in Nicosia this afternoon, will also be received by Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, Cyprus News Agency reports.

According to CNA sources, the French Minister will also discuss with his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides bilateral relations, issues relating to the EU, security concerns and energy matters.

An announcement issued by the French Foreign Ministry, says that Jean-Marc Ayrault will meet with President Nicos Anastasiades, his counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides, and the UN Secretary-General’s special advisor Espen Barth Eide, as well as Mustafa Akinci, the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

He is set to sign several agreements with Kasoulides and will discuss the inter-Cypriot negotiations, which France supports.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN brokered talks resumed in May 2015 aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
